Tree Diseases
Tree diseases often ruin the overall health of a tree and the landscape in general. Most diseases are caused by bacteria or fungi. Often pruning can help minimize disease but , it is the arborist's task to diagnose the problem properly to determine the right procedure to take.
Here are some of the most common tree diseases:
Dutch Elm Disease
A fungal disease that infects American Elm tree's vascular system. The fungus clogs the vascular tissues that inhibit water movement that eventually causes the tree's death. One symptom to watch for is decaying branches.
Fire Blight
Apple and Pear trees are the types of trees usually affected by this disease caused by bacteria.
Tree Blight
A tree that is wilting and shows dead leaves or limbs and has leaves that are turning to brown may have the Tree Blight disease. This tree disease is brought by bacteria or fungus.
Leaf Spot
Many types of trees are infected by this round spots on leaves. Leaf spots are usually caused by bacteria or parasitic fungi. If there are a lot of leaf spots on a leaf, they may eventually turn into a blotch or blight.
Leaf Scorch
It is the browning of the leaf tissues that include the tips. Leaves that are infected by this disease can eventually droop or die.
Oak Wilt
Red Oak trees are mostly affected by this fungus-caused disease. Symptoms may differ from one type of tree to another but discoloration, wilting, and death are some of the common symptoms of this disease.
Verticillium Wilt
Trees that are affected by this fungal disease turn to yellow, sag, and die eventually. If you check the vascular system beneath the bark is usually showing discoloration.
Pine Wilt
Pine Wilt commonly infects pine trees and results to browning and eventual death of the needles of the tree, or worst is the entire tree. It is brought by a Pinewood Nematode.
Armillaria Root Rot
This fungal root rot is caused by a number of various members of the genus Armillaria. It is more popularly known as the "shoestring rot." This disease causes mushroom to grow on dead wood.
Canker
It is a common disease that affects many trees and shrubs. Canker cause necrosis of the bark and cambium on branches that will result in some areas of the ark to die.
Leaf Blister
Also known as the leaf curl, leaf blister is a disease caused by fungus. Oaks are mostly affected by the disease that generally looks like swollen areas on a leaf.
Chlorosis
This is a disease where leaves produce insufficient chlorophyll resulting in yellowing of leaves. Not enough nutrients in the soil are one of the reasons for this condition.
Necrosis
Death of cells is the primary cause of necrosis in plants. The plant tissue that is affected by this disease turns from brown to black.
Powdery Mildew
This fungal-caused disease appears as white powdery spots on leaves. It mostly affects Crab Apple, Sycamore, and Lilac.
Sooty Mold
It is a collective name for various Ascomycete fungi that commonly affects fruit-bearing trees.
